Description of the R&D Centre

The R&D centre is the ground floor of the building with a total area of 315 m2.

The R&D centre consists of the following:

1- Chemistry Lab.

2- Instruments Lab.

3- Microalgae and Botany Lab.

4- Algae Culture Room.

5- Store Room.

6- Washing Room.

7- Manager's Office.

8- Reception Area.

9- Conference Room.

10- Tea Room.

11- Service Area (kitchen and toilets).

1- Chemistry Lab:

Chemistry Lab has been designed to carry out various chemistry experiments and tests and it has a total area of 18.7m2 (4.85x3.85m) with bench area of 7.76m2.

This lab has a lot of cupboards beneath benches and many shelves for storing the frequently used glassware and chemical reagents and it is also containing a fume cupboard appropriate for carrying out the reactions that emit gases or the tests that involve the use of unsafe volatile solvents.

The lab has a side room, belongs to it, of total area 23m2 (8.1x2.85m). This extra room contains a large sink and the large scale extractor invented by a highly talented member of the R&D Centre's team.

2- Instruments Lab:

This lab has a total area of 18.7m2 (4.85x3.85m) with a bench area of 10.54m2 and it has been designed in such a fashion that suit of the various equipments and instruments that can be used for the analysis of biodiesel and other stuff. The lab is air conditioned to ensure the maximum performance of the instruments.

The lab also has a number of cupboards beneath benches for storing the spare parts of instruments and other stuff such as centrifugation tubes. Besides, there are recent PCs in the lab for recording, analysis and drawing the data obtained from the instruments.

3- Botany Lab:

Botany Lab has been designed to be suitable for carrying out various biological experiments and tests and it has a total area of 19.3m2 (4.9x3.95m) with a bench area of 4.16m2.

This lab has many cupboards (beneath benches) and a lot of shelves for storing the frequently used glassware and reagents and it is equipped with advanced binuclear microscopes for algal examination, three Millipore filtration systems, magnetic stirrers, various soxhlets and other extraction systems.

The lab has a side room of a total area 23m2 (8.1x2.85m). This extra room contains two units of photobioreactors designed by the R&D Centre's team. These photobioreactors are helpful in the mass culture of microalgae.

The side room is covered by transparent plastic sheets in such a way that permits daylight for algal cultivations and it contains a large washing tub in addition to a bench area appropriate for carrying out algal biomass harvesting.

4- Microalgae Culture Room

The main target of culture room is the maintenance of algal cultures. Therefore it has been designed in such a fashion that is appropriate for isolation and cultivation of algae and it has a total area of 18.7m2 (4.9x3.84m) with bench area of 6.477m2.

This room has some cupboards (beneath benches) and a large number of illuminated shelves for the algal growth.

The culture room has equipped with advanced binocular microscopes for algal examination and it also has a recent PC for recording and drawing the data from the experiments.

5- Store Room

The store room has a total area of 10m2 (3.32x3.02m) with bench area of 4.8m2.and it has cupboards (beneath benches) and a number of shelves for the storage of glassware, chemicals and solvents. The room contains also a mixer for grinding plants and algal specimens in addition to a sieving set.

6- Washing Room

Washing room has a total area of 10.7m2 (3.12x3.45m). It has a large size washing tub designed for washing various glassware. It also contains a mobile table.

The room also contains an autoclave for the sterilization of the nutrient media necessary for algal growth.

7- Manager's Office

This office has a total area of 13.4m2 (4x3.35m), well furnitured and contains a recent PC that masters all other PCs in the R&D centre through intra-network.

8- Reception Area

The reception has a total area of 23.77m2. The furniture of the reception area includes a reception desk, file cupboard and guests couches. It also contains a recent PC for the use of the personal assistant (PA).

9- Conference Room

The conference room has a total area of 13.4m2 (4x3.35m). It is equipped with suitable furniture comprises of a rectangular conference table suitable for 8-10 persons and sufficient number of chairs. It also contains a white board, advanced data show system and cupboards for files and books.
